As promised, the above posted photos are part the 2nd and last batch of badges designs that I did for the YFC Project.
In retrospect, compared to Batch 1, I feel that my designs have become brighter and more youthful (in a way?). Before coming up with this new group of designs, I thought hard and came up with a few questions:
  • What do Singaporean teenagers/teenagers in general like?
  • How do I incorporate cartoon figures in my designs?
  • How to include more colour in my designs?
  • How can I more efficiently manipulate the orientation of my words in the designs?
  • What do teenagers nowadays have in common?
  • How can I generalise my themes in my designs so that teenagers of different characters and interests will be attracted to my badges?
Of course, there were somemore questions which I posted to myself in reflection to Batch 1 of badges. Also, I approached my classmates, the people who bought the badges and YFC groupmates for some constructive feedback. In general, they all said that I should make use of more colours, and broaden by colour choices. Personally, I do agree with their feedback, and this prompted me to reflect and come up with more improvements. One of which I thought that my designs could have more colour contrast by making use of complementary colours.
After all the collation of feedback and reflections, I created a new batch of badge designs (Batch 2).
Again, I made use of content that was relatable to teenagers (our target audience). This included music. Yet, many teenagers have different tastes in music. Hence, I tried to include all the genres of music on 1 design. Thereby, teenagers/people who love music (any genre) can have interest in this design. Colour use and composition was also more varied in this batch of designs.
All in all, in my opinion, I feel that Batch 2 of designs were better compared to Batch 1. I was justified by this self-derived conclusion based on the response that came back with the selling of Batch 2. Batch 2 designs had generally better response.
Ah, I was really really proud of my improvements!
With this, one can see the utmost importance of reflections and feedback. In my future art projects, I do hope for more constructive feedback by my peers and teachers, and I will most defenitely reflect on my work so as to improve further.
