In April 2011, I participated in a project the Citi-YMCA Youth for Causes Project. It is an entreprenieral project for Singaporean youths to raise funds for respective VWOs (Volunteer Welfare Organisations). Together with 3 of my other groupmates Lynn, Melissa and Rou Jing, I participated in this project.
Our VWO was the Singapore Cancer Society. Thus, we sold merchandise which included Made In Candy sugar candies and self-designed badges. The above pictures were badges that were designed by me. They were part of the 1st Batch of badges that I designed for this project.
Content of the badges were basically slogans or lyrics of songs that were common to young teenagers (which were my team’s main target audience to raise funds from). Lyrics of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way was part of one of the designs that I did. All designs were basically done by me.
Prior to this, I had absolutely no experience in designing badges at all. Hence, I do feel that this batch of designs were not really good, and could have been improved further. Well, one aspect of area for improvement would be the orientation of the words, the fonts and perhaps, I could have added more colour to add more diversity and vibrance to my designs. Furthermore, I could have done more graphics on my badges eg. Adding of Cartoon figures/Cariacatures. Ultimately, these modifications would have made my designs more unique and appealing.
We printed these badges and sold them to the general public during street sales. Response was rather acceptable (not good not bad). As the designer of the badges, I must say that I am quite happy that people do appreciate my designs and bought my badges. However, art does not have limits. Looking back, I feel that there is so much improvements I could have made.
This project was a platform me to use my creative juices and explore graphic design. It was defenitely a fresh experience for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process (except for the stress).
Batch 2 of badges will be posted soon! More details and reflections on Batch 2 badges will be done on a separate post!
